This statue representing "Truth, unadorned and unequivocal" was given in 1913 as a monument to three great German newspaper editors of the influential Westliche Post: Carl Schurz, Dr. Emil Preetorius, and Carl Daenzer. Professor Wilhelm Wandschneider of Berlin designed it. Brewer and philanthropist Adolphus Busch, who initiated the competition, donated the major contribution of $20,000.
The figure is bronze and the pedestal is granite. The female nude figure, which symbolizes truth was very controversial when it was unveiled. The torch symbolizes the enlightenment of the German and American alliances.
The best known of the three editors was Carl Schurz (1829-1906), whom President Abraham Lincoln appointed as minister to Spain. Schurz later became a Union general in the Civil War, senator from Missouri (1869-75), and Secretary of the Interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes. |
