Schmidt Family

Ernst [Heinrich Friedrich Ernst Schmidt], as he was called, came to the U.S.A. in 1850 and became a citizen in 1855. He was a turner of ivory billiard balls and made carved ivory cane handles. He founded the country's second billiard business at No. 12 So. Third St. … In 1880 [son]Oscar joined his father in the business and they started to handle billiard supplies along with the cloth and balls...The family- owned A.E. Schmidt Co., 112 Sidney Street, still manufactures pool tables and supplies.
