Schmiemeier Family
|
In 1834 Johann Friedrich Schmiemeier and his wife, Catharina Elsabein Echelmeyer, along with five children, decided to leave Westerbeck Kreis Techlenburg in the Prussian province of Westphalia...About ten to fifteen families from the immediate vicinity, and all belonging to the Evangelische Kircherngeminde of Wester-Kappeln, journeyed with them. This group arrived in New York in October of 1834 and traveled by stage and river boats. The came to St. Charles in December of 1834. The people settled on farms and built their log cabins. Since they were from the same church in of Wester-Kappeln they started worshipping in Johann Friedrich’s log cabin. (Family history donated to the Library by the German-American Heritage Society.) |
