I myself was most anxious to come [to the U.S.], but Father would not consent until it became a question of military service...This situation finally induced my father to give his consent. I engaged passage from Havre to New York... I went direct from New York to Lincoln, where I found a welcome with my oldest sister. The country was in the midst of a very exciting presidential campaign. I had the pleasure of shaking hands with both Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Douglas on their campaign trip through Illinois...(Family history donated to Library by the German-American Heritage Society.) |
