Originally built for the German Theatre Society, this 1500-seat theater designed by architects Widmann and Walsh, opened as the Victoria on March 1, 1913, with a production of Goethe's Faust. German actors performed the play entirely in German. Anti-German sentiment early in World War I forced closure of the German-language theatre on September 17, 1917.
The building reopened after the war as the Liberty movie house. Since then the building has been used in different capacities over the years.
Its distinctive neon sign dates to its 1950 remodeling as the Sun Theatre. It is part of the Grand Center, Inc. arts and entertainment district currently under development. |
