Bethlehem Lutheran Church

Salisbury Street (2153)
Louis Wessbecher

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the Bremen-Hyde Park section of St. Louis was established by a German-speaking congregation in 1849. The present Gothic-Revival building dating to the last decades of the 19th century was designed by St. Louis architect Louis Wessbecher.

Active as a mission church, Bethlehem has been the mother church for six other north-side German Lutheran Evangelical churches: Ebenezer, St. Paul's, Bethany, Grace, St. Matthews and Markus.

The schools of these congregations were primarily concerned with the education of the children of German immigrants. English was not used exclusively in services at Bethlehem until 1915.

A sign on the church says "Home of the original Lutheran Hour".
