Approximately one quarter of the American population can trace its ancestry to German-speaking regions of Europe. The St. Louis area is no exception. Between 1815-1860 thousands of Germans immigrated to Missouri. By 1860 the German-born and their children composed 60 percent of the persons who called St. Louis home. Today many St. Louisans continue to proudly claim German ancestry. Lasting Impressions: German-Americans in St. Louis looks at the ways German immigrants and their descendants influenced the history and culture of the St. Louis area beginning in the early 1800s and continuing through today. Willkommen to the exhibit. Browse through all of it. We believe you will leave with Lasting Impressions and a better understanding of the many contributions German-Americans have made to the St. Louis area. |
