Eskimo salutation

Encountering Northern Neighbors

Eskimos, or Esquimaus as they were referred to at the Fair, came to St. Louis from Alaska and Labrador.

The Eskimos in their snowshoes and fur clothing with their wolf-like dogs walked0 down the Pike or around the fairgrounds. In addition to an attraction on the Pike, Eskimo cultural artifacts were seen in the Palace of Manufacturers and the Anthropology Building.

Perhaps the most popular resident of the Eskimo village was eleven-year-old Nancy Columbia (or Columbo). Nancy and her family participated in several fairs. Beside the Columbian and Louisiana Purchase expositions, visitors at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo and the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha could meet her.

Born at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in 1893, Nancy received her unique name from Mrs. Potter Palmer, president of the Board of Lady Managers at that exposition. Nancy was for Nancy Hanks, the mother of Abraham Lincoln, while Columbo was for Christopher Columbus.
